The story of AKG began in 1946 with Abdelkader Al Akkad, a visionary entrepreneur who laid the foundation for what would become a leading regional enterprise. The journey started with Mahoney,
under Al Akkad’s leadership, providing essential maritime services to foreign vessels calling the Port of Alexandria.
During the 1960s, Mahoney strategically expanded its operations, incorporating labor and tugboat services while securing long-term contracts with prominent American Shipping Clients. This growth solidified Mahoney’s reputation as a trusted leader in Egypt’s maritime industry.
By the 2000s, Mahoney further strengthened its market position through the development of a comprehensive feeder service network, enhanced shipping agency offerings, and an expanded fleet.
A strategic partnership with Unifeeder broadened its liner services, extending its reach across the Eastern Mediterranean and
Inter-Egyptian ports, from the southern coast to the Gulf region.
As the business expanded, successive generations of the Al Akkad family brought fresh perspectives and diverse visions. While this diversity fostered innovation, it also presented challenges in maintaining a unified strategic direction. Recognizing the need for cohesive leadership, the family established AKG as a parent company, introducing formal corporate governance for the first time in the company’s history.
